Theatres

Krakow is very much a city of theaters, and boasts a long tradition of important playwrights and artists, such as Tadeusz Kantor. But because of the language barrier, most visitors will never delve into the city's theater scene. Perhaps one exception might be the Groteska puppet theater which puts on many shows aimed at children, some of which can been understood intuitively without any knowledge of the Polish language. In addition, Krakow has a new opera house which performs an international selection of classic operas in the their original languages, along with the occasional Polish opera. Another interesting theatrical event is held every year in early July: it's the week-long International Street Theater festival that takes place mostly on Krakow's main town square.
