Museums

An astounding 75% of all works of art found in Poland are located in the museums of Krakow. The most famous work of art is the "portrait of a lady with an ermine" by Leonardo Da Vinci which is normally housed in the Czartoryski Museum, but which currently is in Warsaw because of museum renovations. The Sukiennice museum on the main square is a great place to spend an afternoon immersing oneself in 19th C Polish painting, and they also have a wonderful outdoor patio cafe on the roof which is open in warm weather. Two new museums have opened recently in the Podgórze neighborhood: in Oskars Schindler's old factory is a museum dedicated to the history of Krakow during the Second World War, and right next door is the first museum in the city dedicated solely to modern art. And don't forget the Wawel castle, which is an entire museum complex filled with renaissance and baroque art.
