Krakow - The Magical City

As the old capital of Poland, Krakow has a special place in the national consciousness. For the casual tourist this may not be vitally important or discernable, but this special role as the "spiritual" capital of Poland imbues Krakow with an added ambiance. The city is a vibrant university town that boasts the largest Medieval market square in Europe, plus exquisitely preserved Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural monuments of the highest order. If you get bored of traditional sightseeing, the glorious architecture creates a great backdrop for just sipping a coffee or glass of beer in the outdoor cafes that line practically every street from April-Oct. And at night there are hundreds of bars to suit all tastes, many of them housed in atmospheric cellars. Browse, read and check things out!

Description

The Cloth Hall
This venerable structure that divides the Main Square in half has gone through many renovations and been altered many times over the centuries. The first wooden structure was erected in the second half of the 13th century as a market for merchants and a place for them to keep their goods safe at night. The first stone structure was built in the 14th century and this Gothic market hall survived until going up in flames in 1555. It was then rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Italian architects and artists, but the old pointed Gothic arches can be seen as you enter from the north or south end of the Cloth Hall. The building eventually fell into ruin and by the middle of the 19th century was set to be demolished. Fortunately, it was renovated instead (1875-79) and given some new architectural features: the arcaded walkways that line the building, and the eastern and western sides were given facades as well. The Cloth Hall is no longer the place for cloth merchants to sell their wares, but a place were local crafts and souvenirs are sold. Upstairs is the gallery of Polish 19th century paintings (set to reopen sometime in 2010). The Cloth Hall also houses a mysterious knife which legend says is connected with the history of the distinctive two towers of St. Mary's. The knife hangs in the Cloth Hall for all to see, but can you find it?
